	Of course, when this happened, someone had to run downstairs to open up the front door. Between that my daily walks, it was like a stairmaster. I must admit that carrying a suitcase heavily laden with wine up and down the stairs was a pain. Naturellement, quand ceci s'est produit, quelqu'un a dû courir en bas pour ouvrir la porte avant. The front door was tall and wooden, and there was a single key that I was sharing with my hostess. There was a doorbell and buzzer downstairs, but it didn't work most of the time. Prior tenants had had break-ins, so the fifth floor apartment in which I was staying had quite the swanky security setup, with plenty of steel and a killer deadbolt. My room was bright and airy, temporary vacant by an absentee roommate who was travelling the world. The sky brightened early, and by about 0900, the sun was shining into the room. Opening the doors led to a cacaphony of sounds from the street and the faint smell of sea air. Ma pièce était vide lumineux et bien aéré, provisoire par un compagnon de chambre d'absent qui voyageait le monde. Le ciel a éclairé tôt, et par environ 0900, le soleil brillait dans la salle. Ringlo greeted me frequently, and of the door to my room was open, he'd come in, sniff my suitcase for a few minutes and then wander off uninterested. Terracotta tiled floors were common in Marseille, and felt wonderfully cool against my bare feet. Every once in a while when I or someone else was walking through the apartment, there was the 'clink' of loose tiles, worn free from their adhesive over years of use. I had wireless access via the wireless modem and router, but being an old building power was at a premium, and multiple devices were plugged into single outlets all over the place. The bathroom was delighfully charming, with some excellent architechtural details. The sink and bathtub were huge, old, and porcelain with really intriguing fixtures. The sink had some incredibly deco lines to it, and the bathtub shower was an interesting blend of lines and curves and hoses and pipes. Of course, no bathroom in Marseille would be complete without some of the incredible olive-oil based soap for which the region is famous. I didn't bring any home, but I guess that's another reason to return. La salle de bains charmait delighfully, avec certains excellents détails architechtural. L'évier et la baignoire étaient énormes, vieux, et porcelaine avec les montages vraiment intrigants. L'évier a eu quelques incroyablement lignes de deco à lui, et la douche de baignoire était un mélange intéressant des lignes et les courbes et les tuyaux et les pipes. Naturellement, aucune salle de bains à Marseille ne serait complète sans une partie du savon basé par huile d'olive incroyable pour lequel la région est célèbre. 	One of the most intriguing rooms for me wasn't really a room as much as it was a vestibule. A small hallway connected the main living are to the WC, and many times I would just stop and stare at the details contained therein. The floor always struck me as interesting, and it wasn't until about halfway through my stay, going to the bathroom in the middle of the night that I realized why. The floor glowed. It was made of translucent pebble glass, and the neighbor's lights from the floor below shone up through it providing an eerie glow. It's one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. Une des salles les plus intrigantes pour moi n'était pas vraiment une salle autant que c'était un vestibule. Un petit vestibule a relié la vie principale sont à la carte de travail, et beaucoup de fois je m'arrêterais juste et regarder fixement les détails a contenu là-dedans. Il est l'une des choses les plus belles que j'ai jamais vues.
In the corner, an empty bottle and two bricks. No practial purpose, seemingly abandoned in a forgotten corner, but they just seemed to fit. Alost as if it were an installation created for that specific space. Above that, two spigots, unused. Against the wall, in the context of the space, a lovely composition. The WC itself, a small cramped room, layered with years of paint, was a cacaphony of lines and pipes and conduit against a bright aqua backdrop. It seemed as though any new water lines that needed to run came through the WC, with no attempt to hide the pipes beyond a coat of paint. If a junction terminated, it was capped, left in place and painted over. Sometimes it was crimped shut and painted over. The roommates left notices about interesting art, music, and film events attached to a string for perusal while on the throne.

La carte de travail elle-même, une petite salle à l'etroit, posée avec les années de la peinture, étaient des cacaphony des lignes et les pipes et le conduit contre un lumineux contexte d'aqua. Each day I played 'wine roulette', purchasing a few bottles of wine from local grocers, each priced under €5. Most were good, some were bad, a few, like my Minervois, were excellent. Walking all day, I needed to stay hydrated, drinking much water and juice. Dead solidiers accumulate quickly. The kitchen had the most amazing sink. It was a single piece of granite with a shallow bowl. Worn smooth from years of use, it had real character. Water pressure, on the other hand, left something to be desired. La cuisine a eu l'évier le plus étonnant. C'était une d'une seule pièce de granit avec une cuvette peu profonde. When I told my hosts that I wanted to make Indian food for them, they misunderstood. They thought that I wanted to make Native American Indian food, not Indian Indian food. Of course, I managed to find all of the missing ingredients in local markets, there were some at the apartment already, and I made dal a few times during my stay. The kitchen is where it all happens. Everyone needs to eat. Coming together as friends to share food and share experiences was the high point of the trip for me. I feel fortunate to have met the people that I met, fortunate to have shared space with them, fortunate to have shared food and drink. My gratitude to my hosts, to whom this page is dedicated.
