Script critique, consultation, and writing services

Why A Script Critique?

There are many reasons to critique a script, and just as many ways to approach the critique. A novice screenwriter may need guidance regarding basic requirements of structure, form and story flow. An experienced writer may need an outside perspective to help her determine a direction for a rewrite, or a producer might need assistance analyzing whether or not the screenplay is production-ready or not.

Having your script critiqued is a structured, non-threatening way to get inexpensive and constructive feedback on your script and writing skills.

You learn how to ask for and how to receive input on your project and abilities. You learn what an industry professional thinks of your work before you send it out to agents, competitions and studios, and it's your choice whether or not to take that individual's suggestions or criticisms.

Evaluation and Development

Often, a writer needs help evaluating ideas before writing the screenplay. We're happy to evaluate a treatment (usually ten to fifteen double-spaced pages), a concept (one to three double spaced pages) and even novel manuscripts. We'll alert you to any potential story or character problems that will need to be addressed as the screenplay is written. For novel manuscripts, we evaluate for marketability and provide general comments and suggestions for improvement in the transition from the page to the screen.

  • Evaluate a manuscript - $450.00 (up to 200 manuscript pages, $1.00 per page thereafter)
  • Evaluate a treatment - $250.00
  • Evaluate a concept - $150.00

Workshops

Our Screenwriting Workshop is an introduction to writing for the screen. By the end of the workshop, attendees will have a historical context for screenwriting, a basic understanding of screenplay formats, a basic understanding of screenplay style, and will have a basic understanding of special considerations in writing for the screen. We'll also provide a reading list for further independent study. One hour. $175.00 plus travel expenses.

Our Story Crafting Workshops are a follow up to our Screenwriting Workshop, and are designed for writers with works in progress, either screenplays or manuscripts being adapted to the screen. After a brief review of the material covered in the beginning Screenwriting Workshop, then move on to more intensive explorations of character, story flow and narrative structure, using the attendees' own work as real-life examples. Our Method

Just as there are a multitude of reasons to critique a script, there are also multiple approaches to that critique. A script intended as an independent art house film or low-budget vehicle for a writer, director or actor probably wouldn't be judged with the same set of guidelines used for Hollywood blockbusters.

Our first step is to schedule an in-person, telephone or e-mail interview. We want to know your goals for the project. Are you planning to produce and direct this film yourself, or are you preparing it for sale to a major studio? Do you just want to get a fresh perspective on your idea, or do you need a hand with a full-scale re-write? We'll explain our various services in detail and work with you to determine which of those services best fit your needs.

At Bartoli Filmworks, we believe that the best scripts are character driven. As we read scripts, we ask a number of questions about the characters and how they fit within the story structure. We answer these questions and frequently offer constructive criticism and specific suggestions to strengthen the story, characters or dramatic structure.

  • Does you have a good setup in the first ten pages?
  • Is the story driven by characters, themes or situations?
  • Is there a strong conflict or crisis?
  • Is there a climax and a satisfying resolve?
  • Are you consistent throughout the story?
  • Do you have an interesting protagonist and a solid antagonist?
  • Is there an ending?
  • Is your script easy to read?
  • Does the plot work?
  • Are there interesting plot twists to keep the audience engaged?
  • Do plot twists need to be strengthened and created?

At the end of the critique, we'll provide written notes covering the positive and negative aspects of the script, and if requested, will provide one follow-up telephone conference (within thirty days of the critique) to clarify anything about which you may have a question.

We offer discounts when reading subsequent drafts within a reasonable period of the initial critique.

Normal turnaround time is two to three weeks from the time we receive your materials. We usually recycle scripts thirty days after the critique, but we'll be happy to return it to you upon request and a self-addressed envelope with appropriate postage.
